Record an idea
Capture a voice memo or a quick idea from your phone or computer straight into a private project.
Available on Artist · Producer · Studio · Label
This guide is for artists and producers who want to catch an idea before it goes. Record uses your phone's or computer's microphone and saves the recording as a song in VYNLT.
Record
- Open Record. On a phone it is the button in the middle of the tab bar.
- Tap to start. Allow the microphone if your browser asks.
- Tap again to stop. You can listen back before you save.
- Give it a Name and choose where to save it under Save to.
- Choose Save.
Trim before you save
- Choose Trim.
- Set the start and end, or use Start at playhead and End at playhead.
- Save. Trimming saves a new version: your full-length recording is always kept as version 1.
What you'll see
- A level meter while you record. Clipping — back off the mic means it's too loud.
- The recording is raw input, with no noise suppression or automatic gain.
Common problems
- No sound is recorded. Check that the browser has microphone permission. On iPhone, open Settings → Safari → Microphone.
- "This browser can't decode the recording for trimming." It will still be saved exactly as recorded. Trim it later with Trim, fade, pitch or speed… (see Edit a version).
- Discard throws the recording away. It can't be undone.
