Back up to a NAS or network drive
Back up to a Synology, QNAP or UGREEN NAS, Nextcloud, or any shared folder your computer can see, with every file checked after copying.

This guide is for studios and anyone who keeps music on a NAS. There are two ways to back up to one:
- NAS (WebDAV): VYNLT's servers copy straight to your NAS over the internet. Your NAS needs WebDAV turned on and an https address.
- The desktop app: your Mac or PC copies to a shared folder it already has connected (SMB, AFP or NFS), a mapped network drive or an external drive. No WebDAV needed, and the NAS doesn't need to be reachable from the internet.
Option 1: NAS over WebDAV
- Turn on WebDAV on your NAS:
- Synology: install WebDAV Server in Package Center and turn on HTTPS (port 5006). Your address looks like
https://your-nas:5006/shared-folder/. - QNAP: Control Panel → Network & File Services → WebDAV. Turn it on, give the shared folder WebDAV access, and use https with the port shown there.
- UGREEN (UGOS Pro): Control Panel → File Service → WebDAV → Enable service (HTTPS port 5006 by default). Use
https://your-nas:5006/SharedFolder/. The folder name is case-sensitive. UGREENlink doesn't carry WebDAV, so use a DDNS name with port 5006 forwarded and a certificate for that name. - Nextcloud / ownCloud: use
https://your-cloud/remote.php/dav/files/USERNAME/folder/with an app password.
- Synology: install WebDAV Server in Package Center and turn on HTTPS (port 5006). Your address looks like
- In VYNLT, open Backup & Sync, and under External clouds choose Connect.
- Choose NAS (WebDAV), pick your server type, then enter the Server URL, Username and Password or app password, and Save.
- Create a backup as in Back up to your own storage.
Option 2: through the desktop app
- Connect the shared folder on your computer first: in Finder (Go → Connect to Server) on a Mac, or File Explorer (Map network drive) on Windows.
- In the desktop app, open Sync and find Back up to a NAS or drive.
- Choose Choose a backup folder… and pick a folder on the NAS or drive.
- Choose Back up now. After that it runs after each sync.
Everything this computer syncs is copied there. Projects set to Backup folders only in Backup & Sync → Computers go only to the backup folder, not your sync folder.
What you'll see
- Each backup folder shows Backed up, Backing up…, Not connected or Needs attention, in the desktop app and on that computer in Backup & Sync.
- A
checksums.sha256file in the backup folder lets you check every file without VYNLT. - Nothing there is ever deleted or overwritten. If you change a file by hand, VYNLT keeps it and writes its own copy beside it.
Common problems
- "Not connected". The share isn't mounted. Reconnect it in Finder or File Explorer. VYNLT won't write into an empty mount point.
- WebDAV says the certificate isn't trusted. Give your NAS a certificate from a trusted authority for its address (for example with Let's Encrypt), or use the desktop app instead.
- The NAS isn't reachable from the internet. Use the desktop app option.
